The danger of frozen bodies of water: rules of conduct from the State Emergency Service

Frosty, snowy weather is the time for winter fun. To keep it safe, follow these rules of conduct when you are near a frozen body of water. And especially – introduce them to your children!
In order to prevent accidents on frozen rivers and lakes, State Emergency Service of Ukraine urges people not to go out on the ice and to warn their children against it.
Subzero temperatures do not guarantee safety on frozen bodies of water! The most dangerous ice is the first and last, because such ice is still extremely thin, fragile, and cannot withstand the weight of even a small child.

Basic rules of conduct near frozen bodies of water:
- do not go out onto ice, especially white ice, with frozen grass or branches – it is the most fragile;

- dangerous areas are those with fast currents, springs, and warm sewage;
- do not kick the ice to test its strength;

- If you step onto the ice and feel that it is unstable, carefully walk back along the same path.
- If you see someone in danger, call an adult and call 101.

Watch the video with your children and discuss important rules of conduct near frozen bodies of water.
Since the beginning of the year, 22 people have drowned in Ukraine. Emergency workers managed to save 25 people, including one child. Be careful and take care of your safety and that of your little ones!
